My Initial Thoughts

VIZIO D32x-D1 Review: My Initial Thoughts

The 2016 VIZIO D series is a lineup of inexpensive televisions with promising features and performance. A television among this lineup is the VIZIO D32x-D1, which this article is all about.

The VIZIO D32x-D1 is a 32-inch smart television that comes with a price tag of $209.95 as of the time this article was published in November 2022. Furthermore, this television offers a high contrast ratio as well as a good motion-handling performance.

However, a television with such a low price tag is expected to feature one or two drawbacks. Read on to find out if the VIZIO D32x-D1 comes with more drawbacks than benefits or vice-versa.

VIZIO D32x-D1 Design, Dimension, and Weight Review

If we talk about televisions with a classy design, the VIZIO D32x-D1 won’t be anywhere on the list. This is due to the fact that the television comes with a not-so-attractive design.

To give more details, this smart television has averagely thick plastic bezels at the top and sides of its display. However, the bottom bezel is significantly thicker than the others.

This may be due to the fact that it features a “VIZIO” inscription for easy identification of the television’s manufacturer. That aside, the VIZIO D32x-D1 comes with two black V-shaped legs.

These legs are made of plastic and positioned wide apart towards the edges of the television. Due to that, you will need a wide table to place the television on if you aren’t planning to wall-mount it.

Nonetheless, the positioning of the V-shaped legs provides enough room for you to place a soundbar in front of the TV. To make things even better, the television’s legs are pretty sturdy, even though they are made entirely out of plastic material.

Therefore, the VIZIO D32x-D1 will barely wobble when nudged or pushed.

Turning around to the back of the television, the first thing you will notice is the chunky plastic panel with a matte-black finish. This back panel comes with 200 x 200 VESA mount holes for wall-mounting the VIZIO D32x-D1.

However, due to the chunky build of the plastic back panel, the television will protrude out of the wall if wall-mounted. Thereby making it look a bit unattractive when mounted on the wall.

To make matters worse, VIZIO didn’t include a cable management system on the television. Nonetheless, that’s understandable considering the price tag of the television.

Nevertheless, the lack of a cable management system means you will have to manually arrange the cable attached to the TV to ensure a tidy setup.

In terms of weight and dimension, the VIZIO D32x-D1 weighs 5130.1 g and measures 726.4 x 64.7 x 433.3 mm (W x D x H). Compared to another 32-inch VIZIO television, this television is lighter and slimmer.

To be more specific, the VIZIO E320i A0 weighs 6441 g and measures 731.5 x 78.7 x 444.5 mm (W x D x H).

Overall, the VIZIO D32x-D1 features a decent build for its price tag. Although the television lacks a cable management system and has a chunky back panel, it is significantly lighter than its competitors.

Hence, I will rate the VIZIO D32x-D1 an eight out of ten in this design review section.

VIZIO D32x-D1 Display Features and Picture Quality Review

VIZIO D32x-D1 Display Features And Picture Quality Review

The VIZIO D32x-D1 comes with a 32-inch LED display. Furthermore, the display features a resolution of FHD (1920 x 1080).

Therefore, the display should be able to provide crisp and vivid picture quality. Besides, FHD displays are 2x better than conventional HD displays.

Nonetheless, FHD or HD displays are nothing compared to the 4K resolution display that most televisions offer nowadays. In addition to its FHD resolution, the VIZIO D32x-D1’s display is made with a VA (Vertical Alignment) panel.

Due to this display panel, this television’s display offers a good contrast ratio of 5,594:1. As a result, the TV display should be able to deliver deep and rich blacks.

Thus, movies with lots of dark scenes will be a joy to watch on the VIZIO D32x-D1. Also, the television will be excellent for use in dark rooms.

In case you are wondering, the contrast ratio of a display is the ratio between the brightest white and the darkest black the display is able to produce. Therefore, the higher the contrast ratio of a display, the darker the blacks it will be able to deliver.

Basically, if a display has a contrast ratio of 3000:1 or above, it will be able to produce deep blacks. Gladly, as mentioned above, the VIZIO D32x-D1’s display offers a contrast ratio above 3000:1.

In addition to its high contrast ratio, this television’s display also supports local dimming that improves its black level. Therefore, with this feature, the blacks that the display will produce should be darker than they would be without the feature.

In doing so, improving the overall picture quality as well as dark room performance of the VIZIO D32x-D1. Sadly, this television’s display offers poor viewing angles due to its VA panel.

As a result, when watching the VIZIO D32x-D1 off-center or from the sides, colors will appear washed out and inaccurate. Due to that, this television isn’t ideal for a large room setting and is best enjoyed when viewed directly from the center.

Aside from its poor viewing angles, the VIZIO D32x-D1’s display also has an average maximum brightness of 306 nits. Although this brightness is okay for moderate lighting conditions, the display will struggle to keep up in bright areas or outdoors.

Nonetheless, the television’s display features a semi-gloss coating that reduces screen glares and reflections.

Moving on, the VIZIO D32x-D1 doesn’t support HDR (High Dynamic Range). For your information, HDR is a picture technology that allows a display to produce detailed, colorful, and life-like pictures when rendering HDR-supported content.

To complement its lack of HDR, this television offers a fantastic motion performance. To begin with, the TV delivers a response time of 11.9 milliseconds.

By the way, response time is the amount of time it takes a display to switch from one color to another. Thus, with a response time as low as 11.9 milliseconds, the VIZIO D32x-D1 will be able to deliver blur-free picture quality when rendering fast-moving content.

In addition to its low response time, this television offers a low input lag of 26.5 milliseconds. As a result, the VIZIO D32x-D1 is a decent television for gamers.

In summary, the VIZIO D32x-D1 offers a good contrast ratio alongside local dimming to provide deep blacks. Additionally, the television offers a fantastic motion-handling performance.

However, the TV lacks good viewing angles and HDR. Therefore, to end this display features review section, I will rate the VIZIO D32x-D1 an eight out of ten.

VIZIO D32x-D1 Sound Features Review

Sound-wise, the VIZIO D32x-D1 features two 5-watt speakers that deliver mediocre audio quality. Also, these speakers aren’t loud at all.

As a matter of fact, they are not loud enough to fill an average-sized room with sound talkless of a large room. To make matters worse, the television doesn’t come with a subwoofer.

Thus, the TV won’t produce enough bass to enjoy thumping sounds and vibrations in movies. Nevertheless, you can always buy a soundbar to get an adequate bass production for enjoying those bass-heavy movies.

In addition to the lack of a subwoofer, this television’s speakers don’t produce clear dialogue. Therefore, conversation-driven content or sports commentary may not be enjoyable on the VIZIO D32x-D1.

On the bright side, the VIZIO D32x-D1 features Dolby Digital Plus. The Dolby Digital Plus is a sound enhancement technology that enables speakers to deliver adequate surround sound and cinema-like sound quality.

In terms of sound distortion, the VIZIO D32x-D1’s speakers offer a THD test score of 0.19%. Therefore, even at the maximum volume level, the speakers will only produce minimal distortion.

In case you are wondering, the THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) test is an audio test that determines the amount of distortion a sound device is capable of producing.

Overall, the VIZIO D32x-D1 offers an average sound performance. Therefore, I will rate the TV a seven out of ten in this section.

VIZIO D32x-D1 Ports and Connectivity Features Review

VIZIO D32x-D1 Ports & Connectivity Features Review

Like most budget televisions, the VIZIO D32x-D1 features a limited amount of ports. Moreover, all the ports are located on the back of the television – some are left-facing while the others are downward-facing.

Nonetheless, the ports will still be very much accessible even if the television is wall-mounted. Having known where the ports are located, let us discuss the varieties of ports the television feature.

To start with, the VIZIO D32x-D1 comes with one USB port and two HDMI ports. One of these HDMI ports is ARC-compatible.

Therefore, you can use that particular HDMI port to connect a soundbar or HDMI-supported speaker to the television. Aside from the HDMI and USB ports, the VIZIO D32x-D1 also comes with a component and composite video input.

In addition to that, the TV features a digital audio out, RCA analog stereo out, an RF port, and an Ethernet port. Concerning wireless connectivity, the VIZIO D32x-D1 is integrated with WiFi 802.11n.

Unfortunately, it lacks Bluetooth.

In terms of the included remote control, the VIZIO D32x-D1 comes with a basic XRT122 VIZIO remote control. This remote control is made of plastic and comes with a glossy-black finish.

Also, the remote control is a bit large and contains quite a number of buttons. These buttons include a full number pad, playback buttons, and an input button.

There is also a square-shaped directional pad, a volume rocker, and a channel rocker on the remote control. In fact, this television’s remote comes with three dedicated buttons for quick access to Netflix, Xumo, and iHeartRadio.

However, despite having numerous buttons, the VIZIO D32x-D1 remote control lacks a built-in mic for voice control. I guess that was expected from a $200+ television.

All in all, I will be rating the VIZIO D32x-D1 a seven out of ten in this ports and connectivity review section.

VIZIO D32x-D1 Smart Features Review

Similar to some VIZIO smart television, the VIZIO D32x-D1 uses the V.I.A. Plus smart operating system. The interface of this smart OS doesn’t look sleek like those found on top-tier models.

However, it is easy to navigate and responsive. Not only that, the V.I.A Plus offers a good number of pre-installed streaming services and applications.

Some of these streaming services include Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, Pandora, YouTube, etc. However, most of the streaming services are paid streaming services, meaning you will have to pay a monthly or yearly subscription to access them.

To make situations more complicated, V.I.A. Plus doesn’t offer a built-in store for downloading more steaming services and apps. Thus, you are stuck with the pre-installed streaming services that come with the smart operating system.

Nonetheless, I believe the pre-installed streaming services and applications should be sufficient for most people. Unfortunately, the VIZIO D32x-D1 lacks a screen mirroring feature like Chromecast or Miracast, unlike high-end smart televisions.

Not just that, the TV also lacks support for voice AIs such as Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. However, the smart operating system of the TV is ad-free.

Ultimately, I will rate the VIZIO D32x-D1 an eight out of ten in this smart features review section.
